VSO Netherlands is about to start an exciting new project in Benshagul Gumuz region in Ethiopia to improve early years primary education, focusing on numeracy and literacy. We are recruiting: 1. Two Primary Education specialists (Primary School Teachers or Teacher Trainers) for a short term job (3 months) starting January 2016 2. Three Primary School Teachers starting a longer term placement (1-2 years) per February/March 2016 to work with local (pre-)primary school teachers, the teacher training college, Regional Education Bureau, Parent-Teacher Associations and communities in order to strengthen primary education in 10 schools.
Job background and purpose
The proposed program aims at improving the quality of basic education services for the most marginalized children, by addressing the critical capacity gaps in the education system. More specifically, the intervention aims at improving school results at 10 primary schools and make them more inclusive for all vulnerable groups and ensure disadvantaged children have acquired the Minimum Learning Competencies for the grade levels in all subjects areas, with explicit focus on literacy and numeracy, and empowering them to better cope up with later learning and realize their potential for life.
Tasks and responsibilities
Work with local primary school teachers in 10 schools, providing in-service training on teaching methodology, child centred approaches with an emphasis om numeracy and literacy - Work with schools, local Teacher Training College (TTC) and Education Bureau on improved access to education for girls, children with special needs and children from minority communities. - Work with teachers and students from the local TTC and Education Bureau on improved pre-service training - Develop appropriate learning materials and teaching aids - Help establish reading clubs, contests, small libraries etc. - Support schools in creating awareness among parents about early years education - Work with teachers, teacher trainers and Education Bureau on action research.
